Social Media & Mental Health

We spend 2hours on social media every day, we don’t even eat for 2hours! Anything we do for that long will definitely have lasting effects on us.

To many of us our social media platforms are our personal highlight reel where we are free to showcase snippets of our lives to the world.

We Struggle With Insecurity Because We Compare Our Behind-The-Scenes With Everyone Else’s Highlight Reel - Steven Furtick

Anxiety, Stress & Depression

Let us begin.

The obsession with perfection that can lead to depression; we take 255 photos only to post one perfect one, wait for the ‘peak’ time to post it for optimum interactions. Recognise the issue here?

  • how many of us have deleted posts because they didn’t generate enough numbers of likes

  • felt small when particular people don’t like or comment on your posts

  • asked for shoutouts to build a bigger following

  • comparing oneself to unrealistic standards from celebs and IG models

There’s more to life than a social following. It’s not worth the stress.

It has become a matter of showing our followers how our lives are great or better off. You get so distracted with the NEED to check your notifications, and that need can quickly turn into an ADDICTION.

  • with every like you get for every post, you get a shot of that feel good chemical, dopamine

  • lose sight of the people and world around you

So what do we do to keep feeling good about ourselves?

We check our likes and comments regularly to see the growth & keep refreshing the page. Sounds to me like every drug I’ve ever heard of. Yeah, addictive. Anxiety, stress and depression inducing.

Sometimes just take breaks, it’ll be good for you I promise.

See you next time,
