Born A Crime Book Review (2)

Hey guys!

Welcome to the conclusion of the Born a crime book review. Let's get straight into it.

Noah's mother aimed to keep her son from internalising the oppression and did well to convince him that he was always greater than society told him. This allowed Noah to dream beyond his circumstances. And he did, he is evidence of that.

No matter how dire things got, they never went without food or books. But even when things were good, his mother refused to spend money on pricey brand-name goods. In return for her hard work, his mother expected obedience, but Trevor like his mother was a rebel! On one occasion he played with fireworks when he was told not to — his missing eyebrows and burnt hair gave him away.

His antics went as far as stealing a car, this part marked my favorite part of the book between him and his mother. She says to him, “Everything I have ever done, I’ve done from a place of love. If I don’t punish you, the world will punish you even worse. The world doesn’t love you. If the police get you, the police don’t love you.” Harshest truth. Black mothers worry about their children as soon as they start crawling.

A lot more heart breaking events happen in the book but I will not ruin it for you guys. I really would love if you read the book and have a conversation about it with me. Both Trevor and his mother mainly went through a lot of hardships but for all the pain, Born A Crime made me laugh-a lot. The monologues between Noah and his mother were hilarious and the inclusion of several South African languages was a nice touch. I particularly enjoyed this as I found myself understanding more Xhosa and Zulu than I thought lol.

The love between Noah and his mother, and their resilience, left me inspired in these pandemic days, when stories of hope and resistance are sorely needed by everyone, everywhere.

I hope you enjoyed this conclusion guys, thank you for making it this far and reading this review that i thoroughly enjoyed writing for you all!

Stay safe, stay blessed, thank you!
