Aren’t you funny, don’t you know that a man being rich is like a girl being pretty? You might not marry a girl just because she’s pretty, but goodness doesn’t it help? - Marilyn Monroe
Pretty privilege is generally when being pretty or attractive gets you better opportunities in life. There are perks to being pretty, some as simple as being looked at, free drinks at the club & people offering their seats on the bus. In terms of employment, attractive people can earn up to 3-4% more than “less attractive people”. Good looks mean they are perceived as more confident, nicer, gentle and approachable than their counterparts.
It is no secret that you can gain a lot of social media influence and build a following thanks to your looks, e.g. Kylie Jenner, Madison Beer.
Were you aware that more attractive people are likely to receive more favourable treatment in the justice system?
A well known manifestation of this is Jeremy Meeks, aka Hot Felon who grew to fame back in 2014 after his mugshot was posted online by the police. Through this he received his name Hot Felon and admits to many magazines sending him letters so he can model for them.
It’s not pretty privilege if we don’t mention the Kardashians, specifically Kim.
She is now too big to fail and no matter how much drama and scandals she lands herself in, she cannot be canceled. Her follower count remains unaffected and her products still sell.
It is important that I mentioned Kim Kardashian because her and her family wrote the book on what is deemed attractive nowadays. Of course by this I mean STOLE TRADITIONALLY BLACK FEATURES AND REPURPOSE THEM FOR WHITE PEOPLE. Every influencer is trying to look like her and achieve the unrealistic coca-cola bottle hourglass figure - there’s no way to bring her down anymore.
Another example of looks, influence and wealth getting people out of sticky situations.
This isn’t a topic I can happily cover in one blog post, so look forward to more in the future.
